TTFH crosses the finish line in Annapolis!
Team Tri for Hospice (Karen Buxton, Charles Fields, Chip Harris, and Becky Sage) completed the 35th edition of the Race Across America - The World’s Toughest Bicycle Race in 7 days, 16 hours and 53 minutes. They finished 4th in the 4-Person Mixed (Under 50) category, cycling 3,069 miles from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD, from June 18th to the 26th. They and their 10-person crew raced through 12 states to raise money and awareness for non-profit hospices along the route and in Greensboro, NC (Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro and Hospice of the Piedmont).
Tri for Hospice, a charity started by Buxton in 2012, is a cause close to all four riders’ hearts.
In 2011 hospice helped Buxton care for her brother, Jeffrey, in her home during the last 10 weeks of his life. He died at 54, following a ten-year battle with colon cancer.
Hospice recently helped Sage’s father and mother-in-law in their final stages. Fields and Harris, both medical professionals, have seen hospice help their patients and families, and Harris rode in honor of his mother, who died from cancer when he was 24. He remembers:
“Hospice played a big role in supporting my father and me during that difficult time. I hold that a lot deeper than anything else. I know I will be thinking about my mom on this ride.”
Over the past four years, Tri for Hospice has raised over $75,000 for Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, and their Team Tri for Hospice Race Across America initiative has seen sponsors, donors and supporters contribute $40,000 to date. The team would like to thank their “partner hospices” along the route: Hospice of Havasu (AZ),Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, Hospice of Montezuma (CO), Hospice of the Chesapeake (MD), The Elizabeth Hospice (CA), Sangre de Cristo Hospice and Palliative Care (CO), Benton County Hospice (MO), FairHoPe Hospice and Palliative Care
Inc.(OH), Hospice of the Prairie (KS), Lincolnland Hospice of Sarah Bush Lincoln (IL), Hospice and Community Care (PA) and Hospice Care Corp (WV), as well as those folks who stopped along the way to share their hospice experiences with us, cheer us on and support our cause.

Together, we are “caring to the finish.”
